Sean "Diddy" Combs is accused of sex trafficking and other crimes, and opening statements of his federal trial in Manhattan are expected to begin on Monday, May 12.
A 2024 federal indictment alleges that Combs used his influence in the music industry to manipulate and lure women, then forced them to take part in orchestrated sex acts at so-called "Freak Off" parties — some of which lasted for days.
According to the indictment, Combs used a range of controlled substances during parties to keep victims compliant — at times without their knowledge. Prosecutors describe him as the ringleader of a violent enterprise linked to allegations of kidnapping, arson, drug offenses and widespread sexual abuse.
Combs has pleaded not guilty. At a status conference before his trial, Combs' attorney, Marc Agnifilo, said that his client was a "swinger" but not a sexual predator, according to Reuters and ABC News.
"There's a lifestyle, call it swingers, that he was in that he thought was appropriate," Agnifilo said, according to ABC. "The reason he thought it was appropriate is because it's so common."

During Daniel Phillip's testimony describing his sexual encounter with Ventura and Combs, the music mogul's three daughters exited the courtroom.
The daughter — Chance, D'Lila and Jessie Combs — re-entered the courtroom before leaving again later.
When video of Combs appearing to assault Ventura was shown to the court, the daughters and Janice Combs, the mogul's mother, looked straight ahead rather than at the video.
Combs' sons, Justin Combs, Christian Combs and Quincy Brown, did watch the video.

May 12, 2025 04:35 PM EDT
During his testimony, Daniel Phillip, an escort, claims he experienced erectile dysfunction after hearing Combs hit Ventura.
Phillip said that after hearing the slap, he overheard Ventura say, "I'm sorry."
The witness said Ventura ran to him and jumped into his lap after Combs left the New York City hotel where Phillip had been hired.
"I asked her, 'Why is she doing this, why is she staying with this guy?'," Phillip testified. ""I tried to explain to her that she was in real danger if she stayed with him."

The second witness to testify at Combs' trial is Daniel Phillip, a male sex worker who says Ventura paid him for sex.
Phillip said he initially believed he was being hired to strip a bachelorette party at the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York.
Combs was in the room, Phillip testified, wearing a white robe, a bandana over his face and a baseball cap.
Phillip said the Bad Boy Records founder introduced himself as being "importing and exporting" business, and said that while he was having sex with Ventura, Combs sat in the corner and masturbated.
Hotel Security Guard Says He Pinned Diddy to Wall After Cassie Assault
May 12, 2025 02:32 PM EDT
Israel Florez, a former security guard at the Intercontinental Hotel in Los Angeles, testified that he witnessed the aftermath of Combs' assault of Ventura in 2016.
Florez, now a Los Angeles police officer, said he was called to the sixth floor of the hotel after a report of a woman in distress.
When he arrived, Florez said he saw Combs wearing only a towel and sitting on a chair, "slouched down, like with a blank stare … like a devilish stare, just looking at me."
Israel Florez.
Florez testified that Ventura said that she wanted to leave — but that Combs told her, "You're not going to leave."
The former security guard said he responded, "If she wants to leave, she's going to leave."
Florez then said Combs offered him money, which the guard believed to be
a bribe," and said, "Don't tell nobody."
At one point, Florez said Combs accused another hotel employee of recording him and grabbed at the security guard's phone. Florez said he then pinned Combs to the wall and the cell phone was returned.
Florez said he recorded the security footage on his cell phone so his wife could see what happened. Florez's footage showing the aftermath of the assault was shown to the jury.
Diddy's Attorneys Say Cassie Assault Video Was Domestic Violence, Not Sex Trafficking
May 12, 2025 01:08 PM EDT
In defense opening statements, Combs' attorney Teny Geragos referenced the infamous hotel security footage appearing to show the Bad Boy Records founder assaulting Ventura.
Though Geragos acknowledged that what Combs did was "horrible, dehumanizing, violent and terrible," she noted that her client is not charged with assault.
"It's not evidence of sex trafficking," Geragos told the jury. "It's evidence of domestic violence."
Geragos said the argument that preceded the incident was over a phone and claimed the alleged evidence against Combs did not indicate sex trafficking.
"You may know of his love of baby oil," she said. "Is that a federal crime? No."

Hotel Security Guard Set to Testify, Followed by Cassie
May 12, 2025 12:57 PM EDT
The first witness set to testify at Combs' trial is a security guard at the Intercontinental, a hotel in Los Angeles.
Security footage appearing to show Combs assaulting Ventura at the hotel was referenced in the indictment. Prosecutors claim the mogul bribed a security guard to keep quiet.
After the security guard's testimony, a male escort is expected to take the stand, followed by Ventura, who was in a relationship with Combs for several years.
Jurors Learn About Other Witnesses Against Combs
May 12, 2025 12:16 PM EDT
During opening statements, prosecutors told jurors about a set of other witnesses set to testify against Combs, besides Ventura.
One is identified as Jane, a single mom who met Combs in 2020 and fell in love with him. Prosecutors say she participated in a freak off because she expected it to be a one-time thing — but it wasn't.
Combs allegedly would not let an escort use condoms while having sex with Jane. Another time, after she vomited, Combs allegedly said "go do it again." He allegedly used threats and video recordings to control her.
Another time, Combs reportedly arrived at Jane's house in a rage. She locked herself in various rooms but he allegedly kicked down the doors, ultimately kicking her to the ground.
Also set to testify is Mia, Combs' personal assistant who claims he sexually assaulted her. Also set to take the stand are an employee who will say Combs forced them into an SUV at gunpoint and a chef who worked grueling hours procuring drugs for the mogul.
Diddy Bribed Hotel Security Guard $100,000 Following Caught-on-Video Beating: Prosecutors
May 12, 2025 12:01 PM EDT
The prosecution said that Combs slipped a hotel security guard $100,000 in a brown paper bag to keep quiet about Combs' alleged 2016 assault of Ventura — and keep the security footage of the incident from seeing the light of day.
The footage would ultimately be published by CNN, spurring Ventura's quickly-settled lawsuit against her ex and precipitating a wave of civil suits against the mogul.
Following the alleged beating, prosecutors say Combs and his inner circle hid Ventura from the outside world as she recovered from her injuries.
Diddy Allegedly Forced Escort to 'Urinate' in Cassie's Mouth, Prosecutors Claim
May 12, 2025 11:49 AM EDT
Prosecutors claimed in opening statements that during one "freak off," Combs forced an escort to urinate in Cassie Ventura's mouth.
Combs' ex-girlfriend felt like she was "choking" during the ordeal, lead prosecutor Emily Johnson alleged the jury.
Prosecutors allege Ventura, expected to be the government's star witness, was forced to participate in freak offs because she "knew she had no choice."
Prosecutors Claim Diddy Was 'on the Hunt' for Cassie After 'Freak Off'
May 12, 2025 11:11 AM EDT
During opening statements, prosecutors attempted to paint Combs as the leader of a criminal enterprise that he used to strengthen his power.
"There was another side to Sean Combs the entertainer," Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Johnson told jurors. "A side that ran a criminal enterprise. During this trial you are going to hear about 20 years of the defendant's crimes. He had a team to help him: kidnapping, arson, drugs, sex crimes."
Johnson also zeroed in on alleged abuse perpetrated against Combs' ex, singer Casandra "Cassie" Ventura.
Johnson described an alleged incident during which Combs was allegedly "on the hunt" for Ventura, having allegedly forced her to participate in a "Freak Off" and found out she was seeing other men.
"He told Cassie he could release video of her having sex with male escorts," Johnson alleged. "He broke into a man's house and he beat and blackmailed his girlfriend."
Jury Has Been Selected
May 12, 2025 10:14 AM EDT
The jury has been selected in Combs' trial, setting the stage for opening statements to begin.
The jury is made up of eight men and four women, who will be sworn in Monday, May 12. Six alternates were also selected. Of the alternates, two are women and four are men.
During peremptory challenges, Combs' attorney Marc Agnifilo said that the prosecution had struck several Black potential jurors, though prosecutors denied that there was any bias, saying "a very diverse group of jurors" had been selected.
One prospective juror was struck after describing multiple bad encounters with police.
Opening Statements Expected to Begin Monday Morning
May 12, 2025 10:14 AM EDT
After a week of jury selection, opening statements in Sean "Diddy" Combs' federal sex trafficking trial are set to begin Monday, May 12.
But before prosecutors and defense attorneys will begin making their arguments, Judge Arun Subramanian will swear in 12 jurors and six alternates.
Subramanian expressed worry over seating a jury due to the highly public nature of the case and the likelihood that it will take several weeks.
The defense previously said one potential juror emailed the court asking to be excused, citing "issues of personal well-being."
Combs was brought into the courtroom Monday morning, wearing a gray sweater over a white collared shirt and khaki pants. He blew a kiss to his family in the gallery.
